Weekend update – no rain, more heat and Leaf Miners…

I’ve got leaf miners on the Tomatoes, Green Beans and Squash. I haven’t found the bug/insect that is doing the leaf mining, but after doing some research it looks like there are several different things that can do the leaf mining. I’ve pulled up the Peas Shelling ‘Green Arrow’ and replaced it with an Okra ‘Burgundy’ . I also repotted one group of Onion ‘Texas 1015’. So far they don’t look real happy with being repotted. I’ve harvested the Spinach ‘Bloomsdale’ and have put the Cucumber ‘Bush Slicer’ in that pot. I pulled the Sorrel out of it’s pot and found that it had almost no soil. I’ve replaced the soil and it seems a little happier now. I’ve put a “plant nanny” on the Squash ‘Summer Baby Round Zucchini’ and Radish ‘French Breakfast’. With the Plant Nanny the Squash is not wilting in the heat of the day.

The Okra ‘Longhorn’ have not come up. So I don’t think the seed is viable.

In order to reclaim two big pots, I’ve repotted 6 of the lettuces into individual pots. My neighbor gave me some Okra ‘longhorn’ variety. I’ve potted them up and earlier potted up another round of Bean Bush ‘Blue Lake 274’.

Weekend Update – putting Tomatoes out in big pots

These are the Beets ‘Touchstone Gold’.

Beets `Touchstone Gold’

The carrots have been small but prolific.

Lettuce 'Romaine' and Carrots 'Danvers'

I’m trying out some companion plantings per Louise Riotte’s book “Carrots Love Tomatoes”. I’ve planted ‘Danvers’ Carrots with the ‘Sugary’ Tomato and Round Baby Carrots ‘Romeo’ with the Tomatillos and the ‘Celebrity’ Tomato.

The ‘Pix Zee’ Peach has beautiful pink and white blooms on it. The Blue Bonnet is also blooming. Pansies are still blooming.

Weekend Update – New Blooms

Spring has sprung! The ‘Pix Zee’ Peach has blooms that are starting to open. The Bok Choy is starting to go to bloom. The ‘Green Comet’ Broccoli has new little heads on it ( they’d been frozen off) and the last surviving ‘Green Arrow’ Shelling Peas has started to bloom again.

I pulled up the Mustard Green. It was in bad shape.

The Persea Americana ‘Day Avocado’ is not looking good. I’ve brought it back inside to see if I can save it.

Weekend Update – beginnings of spring plantings

The weather guys are saying that plants still shouldn’t go in the ground. That is not a problem for me but it does mean I still have to bring the tender spring/summer plants in at night. We got up to 81 degrees yesterday. I’m afraid that’s going to make the lettuces bolt and go to seed.

The Potatoes ‘Yukon Gold’ are growing in an old trash can that had been used as a rain water collection barrel, but it split on the side.

I’m trying Asparagus ‘Mary Washington’ for the first time. It will probably be 2-3 years before I see anything.

I haven’t started any peppers yet and also haven’t seen any in the local nurseries.

The Mustard Green is not looking very good. It has some bug on it. I’ll probably pull it out soon.

I’m beginning to wonder if the Kaffir Lime has made it. It doesn’t have buds on it like the other citrus. The Key Lime has one leaf on it but I see little buds on the branches. I’ve trimmed back the dead branches on it and it had A LOT of dead little branches.

I’ve put “Super Thrive” on the Avocado and all the citrus plants since it’s supposed to be good for helping plants with freeze damage (at least that’s what I’ve heard Bob Webster say).

Weekend Update – suvivors of the freeze

The last couple of weeks of freezing temps have wreaked havoc on the plants. Quite a few of the lettuces didn’t make it. And after many years I think the Lemon grass died. The plants in the garage seem to have weathered the freeze. They were under N-sulate and had a light in with them. The only one I’m not pretty certain of is the Hibiscus. It’ll be a few weeks before I know for sure that it survived.

Actually, the worst casualties have been the terracotta pots. They have cracked and splintered badly.
